Give from Your Individual Retirement Account

Learn how you can help our important work if you are 70 ½ or older through an IRA charitable rollover.

A Special Opportunity for Those 70½ Years Old and Older

You can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as LHON Collective without having to pay income taxes on the money. Gifts of any value $100,000 or less are eligible for this benefit and you can feel good knowing that you are making a difference. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Why Consider This Gift?

  • Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making.

  • Beginning in the year you turn 73, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD).

  • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.

  • Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax

To include LHON Collective in your plans, please use our legal name and federal tax ID. Please let us know of your gift (many retirement providers assume no responsibility for letting nonprofits know of your intentions, so your goals won’t be honored).

Legal name: LHON Collective

Legal address: PO Box 3680, San Diego, CA 92163

Federal tax ID number: 88-2257719

Please email uheine@lhon.org or call Uli Heine, Donor Services, at 1-858-205-6102 for more information on how to make a planned gift from your individual retirement account.

Donate Through Your Donor Advised Fund

Learn how to combine favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to easily support LHON Collective.

Establish your Donor Advised Fund by making an irrevocable, tax-deductible donation to an organization that sponsors a DAF program, such as Fidelity Charitable, Schwab, National Philanthropic Trust, or your local community foundation.

Determine the investment allocation of the donated assets (any investment growth is tax-free).

Recommend grants to LHON Collective whenever you wish to make a gift. We advise entering our full legal name or employer identification number (EIN) 88-2257719 when searching a DAF charity database.

What can my Donor Advised Fund do for LHON Collective?

Together we will work towards a day when everyone affected with this disease will have it as a distant memory and not a daily challenge they must continue to navigate.

DAFs provide a flexible, low-cost method of giving support for our work worldwide. With your support, we can accelerate progress toward a cure for Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) while improving the lives of people living with LHON.

You may also name LHON Collective as a beneficiary of the fund during your estate and legacy planning.

To learn more about making a gift using your donor-advised fund, please contact Uli Heine at uheine@lhon.org.

Match Your Donation with Corporate Gifts

Ask if your employer matches donations to non-profit to make them go farther.

Many companies have programs through which they will “match” the charitable contributions made by their employees. Through corporate gift matching, your employer can multiply your gift, making it go further.

If your employer does offer this program, they can provide you a matching gift form to send to LHON Collective along with your donation.

Let us know that you’re making a matching gift by sending the completed form to:

LHON Collective

Attention: Donor Services

PO Box 3680

San Diego, CA 92163

Our Donor Services office will verify receipt of your gift and return the form to your company for matching funds.

Conditions and criteria for gift matching vary by employer. Some companies offer a payroll deduction plan. For more information or if you are not sure if LHON Collective qualifies for your company’s gift-matching program, call Donor Services at 1-858-205-6102 and we’ll be glad to send information about our mission and programs.
